When your engine is running, the alternator keeps the battery charged and the electrical system going. It generates power based on the needs of the system, cycling on to maintain the system voltage. The electricity demands of the many extraneous electrical devices in today's automobiles cause alternators a great deal of stress. The average alternator now is lucky to last 3-4 years, which is why a prematurely dead battery may actually be caused by a dead alternator.Your car can start with a faulty alternator, but it won’t be able to run for long. The electrical system will perform erratically, the battery will drain of power and the car will cease to function.
